Writing your history can be a daunting task -- but it is well worth the effort! Not only will your family enjoy learning about you and your life, but hopefully you, too, will benefit from this endeavor. You will have the joy of "reliving" many of the moments of your life, and perhaps you will gain some insights as you look back and see "the big picture" of your life. You have an opportunity to "teach" from your experiences, and most importantly, you will allow others to get to know you better.
There are 10 sections posted here, giving a variety of questions to get you thinking and (hopefully) to get your ideas flowing. There is a section on your childhood, another on your adolescent and young adult years, as well as others for marriage, family, retirement, and even one to help you "put it all together and publish." It is not necessary to "start at the beginning" -- start with whatever story or experience you are wanting to tell! The point is to BEGIN.
I have found it most helpful to set aside a specific time each week to work on my history -- otherwise it gets pushed aside by the activities of daily life. Make a commitment to write a little bit every week (or every day if that is your goal). Read through some of the questions posted here for a particular section, and then think about it all week, gathering ideas and memorabilia about that topic or time of your life. Thus, once you are ready to begin writing, you already have lots of ideas to get down on paper.
Have fun with this project! Now, pick a topic and BEGIN!
Is this the year you will write your personal history? Each month I will have a topic or category with some “memory triggers” to get you started thinking and writing.
